In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out to cross the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. Disaster struck when his ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed. All 27 men escaped onto the ice before the ship finally sank, and were able to salvage food, stores and three lifeboats.
What happened next is the stuff of legend. Historians regard Shackleton’s journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia in the converted lifeboat ‘James Caird’, as one of the greatest rescues ever attempted.
