There are almost 640 known shipwrecks along Victoria’s coastline, with only about 240 ever having been located. Vessels varying from small coastal traders to passenger ships full of hopeful immigrants all succumbed to the wild storms and treacherous seas of Bass Strait. Eventually a network of lighthouses brought a measure of safety and security for the brave seafarers plying the coast.
